Oh god Tenley- I can't believe I have to put up with your voice again! It is just sooo painful!! And why the hell is she wearing a diaper?!??!!? Seriously- that outfit is sooo bad!!

Middlesex

This was the first audiobook that I ever listened to- I decided to get one for my last trip to Kirkland. Little did I know it would be 15 1 hour CDs so it took me a while! My friend Lindsay recommended it to me and I have to say...I'm not sure if I would ever do it again with a fictional story. The narrator was HORRID!! HORRID!! The story involves 3 generations of an immigrant family- and this lameass narrator decided to use accents! It is the story of a Greek family that moved to Detroit- and it's full of Jewish, New York, Scottish, you name it accents. And good lord when he was speaking for a woman- I cringed. So I really think that may have ruined the story for me. If I were to do it again I would probably get an autobiography that has the author's voice- I think it would be less distracted.

As for the story- meh. I didn't love it. This is another book that had a lot of hype behind it that really did nothing for me. It is not a rereader. I found it to be HORRIBLY detailed with incredibly inane items yet when the story got juicy and interesting it got rushed. Not my thing.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

There was a lot of hype associated with this book- I have been hearing about it for a while and had quite a few recommendations to read it. This was a complete departure for me- I never usually read thrillers. But I have to say I did enjoy it- it was much more of a psychological puzzle kind of book- not a North American thriller full of gore. I have to admit I really only enjoyed one of the storylines- the whole financial journalist was completely boring to me- I only cared about the murder mystery. But on the whole a good book and a surprisingly quick read.

Time for the controversial statement- I hated Lisbeth Salander. I absolutely could not relate to the character. Everyone portrays her as a feminist hero and I just feel sorry for her. She is not someone I would want to be around. Maybe I'll read the second book and I'll get it but right now she is a very unappealing character to me.

Yet another week with music I hate- god I despise crooning. Frank Sinatra is the worst- dude was tone deaf!!! I know it sounds like I don't like any music- I swear my tastes are quite diverse. They just keep picking crap

I also don't enjoy Harry Connick Jr.'s music but I can acknowledge that he is talented

Aaron- I think this song is way too old for him. Thi sis awkward. Kid can't smile or exude charm.

Casey- I wish he would get rid of the gross ponytail. He seems a bit awkward without the guitar- he doesn't know what to do with himself. And the song is too big for him- he is a bit flat.

Crystal- I hate this and I'm completely bored but that's not her fault since the song is horrid. She is completely amazing though vocally as always. And I like her eye makeup

Mike- I am over this guy. There is something about him that really irritates me. It could be the tongue and licking the lips- that grosses me out. Seriously- I can't watch this guy it's so disgusting. He is way too good times for me

Oh god Shania week- this will be painful. I mean it's not hard to sing better than her- she doesn't have a great voice. I just hate her songs. Yes I know she's from Timmins- she actually has a KL connection too. Her first manager was Mary Bailey from Kirkland and she used to write all her songs. I still don't like her

Lee- he is just always screaming to me. He doesn't appeal to me anymore

Mike- too Luther Vandross- not a fan. I've never even heard this song

Casey- he is doing a good job. It's the difference with him and Lee- he sings and doesn't just scream- he can do crescendos and not scream. Team Casey

I am so behind in all my tivo watching- seriously this is stressing me out! I'm a day late with Dancing with the Stars

Erin- at work today we were debating if she is getting it on with my sexy beast Maks or with Evan. The dance is ok. THe girl can kick. And well anything with Maks is sexy! I just wish he would sahve. I also adore that he spoke out against Kate- amazing!!

This weekend I watched a television show called Thin Ice and let me tell you- it had huge potential but was horrid. What ruined it- Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Girl is a tool and can hardly read- who the hell decided to make her a host?!!?!? About 10 years ago there was a different figure skating show on every weekend- it was all over the place. There is definitely a market for this but involving a complete inappealing hostess like that could not have attracted viewers. All they needed was Kurt Browning. It could have come back and found an audience but she made the whole thing WAY too awkward. Why the hell does this girl keep getting jobs- she's horrid!

The Book of Negroes

I just finished the Book of Negroes and let me tell you I am highly recommending it. It is one of the first books I've read on the African slave trade and it was incredibly informative and obviously quite disturbing. But beyond that it was well written and well researched. I always love reading any historical novel that can teach me about the period and this was no exception. I have to admit there were definitely times in the first 100 pages where I wanted to put the book in the freezer because it was so incredibly disturbing but I pushed through and it was well worth it. A great read.

Plus fun side note- my great grandfather's grandfather was a man named William Wilberforce and he abolished the slave trade in Britain. He is a character in this book which I very much appreciated.

I had heard nothing but rave reviews for this book and had been meaning to read it for a while. It was fantastic- such a great read! It is considered youth lit but it is great for anyone. It is the story of a young girl in Nazi Germany and is heartwarming, charming, and incredibly tragic. It is very well written and the author made a very interesting choice for the narrator...Death. It is written in a unique style and is a very quick read- don't be intimidated by the size of the book.

Alright here it is- the main event. I am so excited to see Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin host. I am just starting to appreciate the genius of Alec Baldwin (thank god the Baldwins haven't been bombed again) but Steve Martin...he's a legend in my home. Crystal- she is definitely the one I'm rooting for. I don't love the song but she is singing it well. Does she have a unibrow?! I think she needs to go to the waxer!

Simon's trailer is two stories high- that's amazing!

Haeley- oh Haeley you are so young and cute I hope she does a country song. Ok this mean face part is annoying me. But I hope she does well. This beginning is a bit rough. And she singing way too close to the mike. This chorus is a bit much for her- I'm not sure who picked this key for her. I don't like the upward camera angle up her skirt- she is like 16! I think that song was a bit big for her- which is actually insulting since it was Miley Cyrus. Oh that was rough. Poor girl.

Lacey- oh I'm not looking forward to this. She butchered the song last week. It's almost not fair that she had her song selected by the judges. Ok this is much better than last week. She still does weird affectations with her voice that I'm not a fan of but it's not horrid.

Katie- ok this segment about her is so lame. She is so Rachel from Glee. I hate this type of music so much- it just puts me to sleep. Soooo boring and too standardy for me. I don't consider this young at all.

Didi- she is another one that I like. And other than the rug last week I really like her clothes. Ryan Seacrest is totally trying to pick her up. I started training when I was 10 and have NEVER heard that you should meow. Ok I hate the weird version of this song- the key is weird. She is really trying super hard and feels she needs to belt and open her mouth like Jessica Simpson. This is a super weird song choice.

Michelle- this girl bored me to tears last week. The breathy thing that she has going on right now is pretty annoying to me. I think she is somewhat flat at times then when she goes for the high notes she is sharp. Not a fan. She always just looks so serious. And her outfit is super weird. The fingers only gloves and bubble skirt...odd

Lilly- I still find her voice and all the facial expressions to be a bit much. Ok she's not horrid but no my thing. And I'm not sure if she will appeal to the general american idol voters

Katelyn- some Coldplay...interesting...she really can sing but I'm not sure if I love her version. I think she should have just sung the song as is. She is making it jazzy which I hate. Ok this is putting me to sleep

Paige- she is the one that I wanted to go home last week. She is another one who sings in a really breathy voice and I'm not a fan of the style. And she is horrible at enunciating- what the hell is she saying?!

Siobhan- this girl is way too weird for me. Ok her voice sounds a lot better in this song but the lyrics are going a bit to fast for her. She is more of a hold the notes kind of singer. Oh that note at the end was too much for me- too much screaming

I have always enjoyed the olympics but I have to say I have enjoyed these games more than any other I've ever watched. I am just so proud to be Canadian and have been so emotionally involved in pretty much every event. The amount of red in the crowds and the absolute national pride has been amazing.

While it is moving that Joannie Rochette was chosen as the flag bearer I think it should have Charles Hamelin, Alex Bilodeau or Jon Montgomery. Charles because he had two gold medals, Alex because his was first and Jon because he was my absolute favorite. I loved him- his enthusiasm was infectious.

Look the cauldron only has the three arms up- I guess they will finish it off. Oh god a mime- please no! No mimes!! Ok this is a bit too much... Oh and they will let Catriona Lemay Doan light the cauldron.

Alright time for the men

Todrick- yuck. I still don't enjoy him at all. It's never a good idea to start a song with Girl. You aren't going to do it for me. Oh god it's a horrid Bobby Brown version of a great Kelly Clarkson song. Yuck.

Aaron- oh poor Aaron looks so scared. He's young but he has a good voice- I think his nerves will get the best of him though. He should definitely stick with country- it will get the votes from the American public. He can definitely sing- he needs to just calm down and get used to this. I like him though he seems genuine

Jermaine- yuck. He is an ass- he called out the band and is an arsehole. Yuck- this is an awful key for him. The weird whispering breathy falsetto is just awful. And the runs- yuck. Next

Tim- I do like him but HATE the sideswept bangs. They are just awful!! I wouldn't be thrilled if the picture they are using of me had big pit stains! I like his voice and like his look- is it just me or is doing blue steele through this whole performance?! Ok bad song choice- I don't enjoy his falsetto at all- it's not strong enough. Every time he sings it's too late I cringe. I hope he goes through though and sings something better next week

Joe- I totally don't remember this guy. What the hell is going with this song?! Who is arranging these songs!?!? And who is controlling the levels- the band is sooo loud!! This song is just going to fast for him- it's like he can't catch up. He isn't memorable enough- I don't see him giong through very far. He's like the guy with the eyebrows last year who didn't make it far. Again- why is the band so bloody loud? They need to turn up the mike

Tyler- ok I do like him but I hope that he doesn't get annoying. Ok I like him- I like the bluesy style. Ok by far my favorite. I really like him. I mean he goes off a bit when he screams- he doesn't have the talent in his scream that Adam Lambert had. But he's still really good

Lee- Ok this is one of my favorite songs of all time...he doesn't need to sing all different notes to make it his own. Oh it's pitchy and it doesn't sound like the same song other than the band repeating the riff. I hate it- he is doing the same the same thing that Todrick did- changing the song too much. Not a fan.

John- I don't really remember his voice. What a HORRIBLE song choice!! It is old and boring and completely unmemorable. Yuck!!!! I think he'll go home because of it.

Big Mike- I thought he was booted off the show. I guess not! I think he will definitely get votes because he is incredibly lovable.

Alex- kid has a full blown mullet. It is very odd. I don't enjoy his tone- it is way too R&B. And he is super nervous so it a bit awkward. I think this guy will definitely go home.

Casey- oh god someone is singing for me to get me to take off my pants. It's working let me tell you. This is by far one of my favorite songs of all time!! Heaven- LOVE IT!! I used to play this on the piano all the time. I swear if he sings Warrant Heaven next week that's it- we'll be married. I really like him. I mean he could do up a button on his shirt but he's great. See this is what I like- a guy who just sings the bloody song. He doesn't change it, doesn't do retard runs. Just sings the notes. Awesome

Andrew- This guy doesn't sing my type of music but I can acknowledge that he is very good. I do like that some of these guys are singing with their guitars. When they get rid of the bad band and just sing- I appreciate it. I actually like him here- he is doing a good job. I prefer this then the Paula Abdul. He is quite good.

Paige- I don't remember this girl- did they ever show her? Her skirt is way too short and her hair is looking odd- it looks like she has bedhead. This was an awful song choice- she doesn't enunciate at all- it's a lot of vowel sounds. And the song is too big so all she does is scream- and rely on the background singers.

I'm SOOOO excited for these Olympics!! i've been looking forward to them for YEARS!! I can't believe that I'm not in Vancouver for them- I've been harassing Nas for years that I would go and yet I'm here....if this wasn't a kick in the ass to budget I don't know what is...

Ok enough about the Debbie Downer- it's the OLYMPICS!!! I was actually on the ice curling until 8:58 and watched the first hour at the club- I'm late blogging. I didn't get to here any of the commentary really and am now on my couch watching Poland walk in. Some comments:

The National Anthem- URG!! Seriously- where the HELL was CELINE!?!? That was HORRIBLE?!!? She had an ok voice but she went all Mariah Carey on that- it was sooo painful! And not appropriate for the event. It should have been sung beautifully and straightforward.

The opening native sequence- again, URG!!! I expected way more ot the opening sequence- the whole thing was native. It acted like that represents all Canadians....and I don't care about the PC shit- IT DOESN"T!!! And why the hell are all those people in the box with the Prime Minister and Governor General? I mean none of us know who the hell they are. And since when are Vancouver AND whistler the territory of the natives!!?

There should have been more in the opening that represent ALL Canadians...ALL of the cultures!!!

Oh the Olympians are already entering- where is the rest of the opening?!

I love the countries that only have 1 athlete- they look SOOO excited!!!

I'm still trying to spot Nas and Sara in the crowd- wehre are you?!

I heard at curling that Gretzky was going to run the torch in then hand off to Terry Fox's mother who will give it to a hologram of Terry Fox who will light the torch. Honestly- I hate the idea of this. I love the beginning....EXCEPT Terry should then hand it off to someone to light it. It's such a HUGE honour that it would mean so much to someone living. And it should be an Olympian.

I'm SOOOO glad to hear Brian Williams announcing- I thought he was with the CBC and I was scared we wouldn't hear him. There is something about his voice that just screams Olympics to me

I am super excited about this season of survivor!! Granted I don't agree with all the choices but all in all it will be good. It would be perfect if Richard Hatch had been able to go, along with Yau Man! Yau Man- I loved you!

I am watching both nights of American Idol tonight- this is actually one of my favorite parts. I always love Hollywood week. Except I am totally against the team challenge- it is completely unfair. These people are being groomed to be soloists- and to have to rely on other douches is just not fair

I still think that those who have been profiled have a much better chance when it comes time for the public to vote

Oh Christ Skibo is there- I didn't enjoy him the first time and we'll see if I enjoy him. I don't love his tone but he's not as bad as I remember. Oh god leave....he's freakin annoying

Oh I hope the country girl does well- I really liked her. I feel so bad for her- she is like so many girls I know who just don't feel like they have anywhere to go.

I don't love Andrew's style of music but I can appreciate what he is doing with Straight Up- he is pretty good

This book was highly recommended to me by a friend of my mother's who said she read this in a few days. I have to say all in all it was a good book. It was well written and it was a very compelling story. But I have to say- it was a tough read for me. It chronicles the life of women in Afghanistan over the past 50 years. And as we all know the oppression of the Taliban was atrocious. But there is so much more that has happened there and that is still happening. I found it super hard to read at times- especially when it involved excessive brutality. I have no problem reading historical novels and the violence does not normally affect me. But there is a reason- it is the past. It is not happening now- there is nothing I can do to change history. But when I know it is happening right now as we sepak- it just way too disturbing to me. It makes me hate people. And it strenghthens my hatred of religion- because let's be honest almost all this shit happens in the name of religion

Allright enough with the sidebars- I do recommend this book. But you definitely need to be in the right state of mind for it

Mortal Instruments Series

I've been trying to think of ways to revive this blog since I just don't seem to take the time to write on it very often. So I decided to write up some book reviews on here. For one I love talking about books- I am thrilled whenever anyone will talk about books with me. Plus this new Twilight era scares the bejeesus out of me- the fact that people actually enjoy that crap is truly frightning. There are soo many good books out there that people need to read.

So the first books I'm going to talk about are the Mortal Instruments series- City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. Let me tell you- they are amazing!!! It is Teen Lit but highly recommend to everyone

I like to say that they are a mix of the Harry Potter world and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The author flawlessly creates a magical world that exists all around us humans that we cannot see- a la Harry Potter. It is inhabited by Shadowhunters who protect all the magical creatures from Demons- a la Buffy.

It is just a super fun read. It can get violent but in this genre it is a must- no retardly lame vegetarian vampires here. I could not put these books down and cannot WAIT for the next one to come out

Last season I adored Jake at the beginning- I mean boy is ridiculously good looking and a nice guy. Then episode after episode he got lamer and lamer- the nice guys finish last thing gets old. Then he cried....and it died for me. I can't handle the crying. When I found out he was the bachelor I was disappointed because boy is lame...but he's good looking so at least it is nice watching him. Not like that loser Jason who was unappealing in every way

It was mystifying several years ago why she was hyped the way she was hyped. Just another starlet with no real significant starring vehicles somehow ending up with a prestigious magazine cover proclaiming her as the next It. Well It never happened. And after all this time and a string of failures, she’s been trying to change the course. So she’s gone back to the major player who tried to make it happen for her the first time. There was an arrangement back then – her sexual services for his professional services – and apparently the same arrangement was resurrected recently in the hopes that she’ll finally confirm a juicy role to kickstart a stagnant career.

Never mind that he’s married. His wife benefits handsomely from his generosity and while he may not fulfill her with fidelity, he certainly makes up for it through client exchange. Probably better that way. And given what he looks like, it totally makes sense. But he is a legend in the business both for his accomplishments and for the way he leads these ladies to their accomplishments, counting a couple of award winners and a few box office heavyweights on his resumé…which is why he quickly tired of our poor girl and discarded her.

But not before drying her out. One day late summer, they were joined in a hotel suite by a third gentleman (identity insignificant), both of them enjoying her as she allowed herself to be taken, and, um, decorated appropriately, all for a reward at the end of the session – the privilege of simply looking at a script, no promise, no confirmation…just an advance read. And a suggestion to show up at a premiere for a few introductions. She is so desperate, it’s been so meagre, she submitted to the humiliation although gamely seems to have enjoyed it. An actor after all, obviously able to shut out her husband and child waiting for her back at home.

And then he just cut it off. Told her he could no longer help her. That her body in his bed was no longer required. Which of course only added to her degradation. She tried and tried to offer up more, willing to engage in further depravity, but was only met with rejection. Because he’s moved on. He’s hunting his next target. A young, nubile, blonde babe with a large profile and a perky rack who so far has been able to resist his advances but is trying to graduate from supporting roles in film, as the fact that she’s a headliner on the small screen has not helped with the quality of scripts she’s being offered, or with many of her auditions so far. She’s currently waiting on a big break and he’s trying to make sure it doesn’t happen, so that in her disappointment, she’ll come running to him, ready to wheel and deal.

Note: there are 4 famous names at play – the reject, the replacement, the power player, and his wife.

ANSWERS: Definitely Harvey Weinstein and his wife- the Marchesa women. Lainey definitely talks about him passing off his clients on her. The reject has to be Jessica Alba- I'm pretty certain of that. The only one I'm confused about is the replacement- I'm thinking Evangeline Lilly

Of course it was Nicole- that was a no brainer. She was the clear winner the whole season. THe bigger question though is- Is the Show Bankrupt?

Think about it- first they dumped Paulina because they couldn't afford her. Then they had Nigel and Tyra as the photographers for most of the season. Then they couldn't afford real models for their "fashion" show so they brought back the girls who had already been eliminated....who were already in Hawaii so they didn't have to pay to fly anyone else in! Oh- and I"m sure Eddie Murphy did some bargaining to get his daughter the gig- like agree to be in the audience

I hope the show isn't cancelled. As hideously annoying and narcissistic as Tyra is with her goddamn smizing I still love this show!

Chuck Liddell- I actually really like him. He is obviously not the best dancer and can look awkward but I enjoy him. He is genuinely trying and not embarrassed to be out of his comfort zone. He is also neither arrogant nor annoying which makes me like him a lot more than most of these men.

Melissa Joan Hart- I find her annoying....it could be her partner though because he has a tendency to make everything really cheesy. I strongly dislike him and his cutesy partners. Ok the whimsical dance- not doing it for me. She needed a partner like Max to bring out the sexy. She seems very flustered with this cance- I think it is too much for her- she keeps messing up and it is showing on her face. Well I definitely didn't see what the judges saw

Natalie Coughlan- Well they decided to dress her like Edyta and gie her no clothes. She is still quite stiff- she needs to let go a bit and she would be really good since she has the flexibility

Aaron Carter- Oh god the blonde hair looks awful on Karina- especially with the black eyebrows. Ew Aaron Carter as sexy...yuck! Methface is not attractive. For the love of god please do up your shirt!! And is pretty much tomato coloured- she is even darker than a tangerine.

Mark- He's good but he doesn't thrill me. Next

Kelly Osbourne- I hae always loved the Osbournes. I wish she would have a bit more confidence- it would make her steps much more precise. And when she messes up she shows it on her face. Oh I definitely think that was better than Melissa Joan Hart

Joanna Krupa- I seriously dislike this girl. Ok I know I sy they should all wear a shirt but my.god. Derek hs a beautiful body. What a pretty little Mormon! Louie ito- Again with the does nothing for me. This guy is just a stoner with bad hair to me. I can't handle people who are good times. He is literally just walking around the dance floor- boring. I used to work with a guy who would always have me up Two Stepping and let me tell you it was a workout- he was just a moving. This guy looks like he could fall asleep. She is doing absolutely everything. He should go home too

Mya- still don't like her. She is in a category of her own though- you can tell she has had a lot of dance training. It is actually unfair- no one else compares.

Tonight I went to my first ever Toronto International Film Festival screening- and to a gala no less! My friend Kacia works as a publicist and had free tickets- WOOHOO!!! I got the call at 4:59pm as I was rushing out to catch my train- of course I went to the screening instead.

I went to see the Boys are Back starring Clive Owen. I get it. I totally get it now. I have never found him particularly attractive but now I see it. He's tall- well over 6 feet because I was in heels and he was taller than me. He also was wearing the hell out of a fine cut suit. He was dashing!

I love that at the beginning the whole cast and crew that were there went on stage. The director previously made Shine- which I loved- and Snow Falling on Cedars- probably the WORST movie I've ever seen in a theater

This movie was actually pretty cute. A bit too much with the precocious child- we all know that I hate children and child actors. But it was good- I would recommend it

So I just watched the Vampire Diaries. Not as lame as Twilight yet it is a blatant rip-off. Yet another dumbass loser vampire who doesn't feed on humans that is obsessed with a teenage girl. At least we have a badass brother played by Boone from lost who is going to kill people. And a flying vampire at that- so Lost Boys! He will make this show for me.

Actually in general it is 1000x better than Twilight. The acting is much better- granted the bar was set quite low. And I did like the female protagonist more- at least she's not a whiny bitch. Granted of course they had to make her fall right away when she tried to run. But she still kicks Bella's ass.

I was just driving to Burlington and heard the best news- Posh has replaced Paula on American Idol!! That is amazing!! I LOATHED Paula Abdul. She was quite simply a retard. A simpleton. Nothing that she said was insightful. She wasn't helpful, she didn't add to the show. And I HATED her banter with Simon- I despised when she interrupted him. And god help us when she tried to be funny. The only time is was funny was when she was so stoned off her tree that she could hardly talk.

When I heard she was off the show because they wouldn't pay her what she was demanding I died laughing. What a retard- know your worth. You can't go from 2 million a year to 20 million- you so aren't worth it. You were marginally talented as a dancer and a mediocre to average singer at best. Don't get me wrong- for 2 years I did love to dance to her songs for a few years. But anyone could have done her songs. I couldn't believe that people were upset that she was leaving and threatened to boycott- god I hate people. Supporting mediocrity at best.

But now- now we have my Posh! POSH!! As most of you I worship at the Posh altar. When I went to the Spice Girls I completely lost my shit.
